James – you might find the approach of Maurice Halbwachs towards ‘collective memory’ useful (at least as a ‘control’) in your work on the mental aftermath of the 2012 olympics . Halbwachs was specifically concerned with the social-construction of memory/history and the differences between individual & group memory/history.
